She made her film debut in Martin Kunert’s anthology horror movie Campfire Tales, followed by a small role in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers. In 1998, she appeared in Dee Snider’s Strangeland. Smart gained wider attention with her role in the teen drama Varsity Blues (1999) and as the recurring character Ruby in the TV series Felicity (1999–2001). She went on to star in the college comedy Road Trip (2000) and was part of the ensemble cast in Jerry Zucker’s Rat Race (2001). She later took a leading role opposite Ashton Kutcher in the sci-fi drama The Butterfly Effect (2004). Amy Smart was born on March 26, 1976, in Los Angeles and raised in Topanga Canyon. Her mother, Judy Lysle (née Carrington), worked in a museum, while her father, John Boden Smart, was a salesman. She studied ballet for ten years and graduated from Palisades Charter High School in Pacific Palisades, California. While working as a model in Milan, Italy, Smart met fellow model Ali Larter, and the two quickly became close friends. After returning to Los Angeles, they took acting classes together.

In 1993, Smart appeared in the music video for The Lemonheads’ “It’s About Time.” Her first film role came in 1997 with Campfire Tales, directed by Martin Kunert. The year before, she had a small role as Queenie in A&P, an adaptation of a John Updike short story directed by Bruce Schwartz. She also had a minor role in the 1997 sci-fi film Starship Troopers as a copilot. Smart starred in the miniseries The 70s, playing a college student during the Kent State shootings.
