Smart gained wider attention with her role in the teen drama Varsity Blues (1999) and as the recurring character Ruby in the TV series Felicity (1999–2001). She went on to star in the college comedy Road Trip (2000) and was part of the ensemble cast in Jerry Zucker’s Rat Race (2001). She later took a leading role opposite Ashton Kutcher in the sci-fi drama The Butterfly Effect (2004). She studied ballet for ten years and graduated from Palisades Charter High School in Pacific Palisades, California. While working as a model in Milan, Italy, Smart met fellow model Ali Larter, and the two quickly became close friends. After returning to Los Angeles, they took acting classes together.
