Barrie began her professional stage work as a resident actress in Corning, New York, in 1953, starring in The Moon is Blue. She also performed at the Rochester Arena Theatre and made her Broadway debut in 1955 with The Wooden Dish, alongside Louis Calhern. In 1959, she appeared in The Beaux’ Stratagem as Cherry, and earlier Off-Broadway roles included Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible and Illse in Mädchen in Uniform, directed by Walt Witcover.
She was part of the American Shakespeare Theatre repertory company during the 1958 and 1959 seasons, earning praise for her performances in several Shakespearean productions.
