Club Career
Stekelenburg’s football journey started at local clubs Zandvoort ’75 and VV Schoten before joining the Ajax youth academy at age 15. He made his senior debut for Ajax on February 24, 2002, in a match against NAC Breda. That same year, he secured his first silverware when Ajax won the Johan Cruyff Shield at the start of the 2002–03 season. Two years later, in 2004, Ajax claimed the Eredivisie title, with Stekelenburg contributing in 10 matches.
He became Ajax’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2005–06 season and won his first KNVB Cup. Stekelenburg went on to win a second Johan Cruyff Shield at the start of the 2006–07 season and later added another KNVB Cup to his collection. In recognition of his performances, he was named Ajax Player of the Year for the 2007–08 season, succeeding Wesley Sneijder.
