Early Life

Coxon was born in Rinteln, West Germany, where his father, Bob Coxon, was stationed as a clarinetist and band leader in the British Army. As a child, he moved to Spondon, Derby, England, where he became a fan of the Derby County football club. His family later relocated to Colchester, Essex, where Coxon grew up and met future Blur frontman Damon Albarn at age 11, while both were students at The Stanway School (formerly Stanway Comprehensive). Early in their friendship, Coxon played saxophone on Albarn’s original songs before switching to guitar and performing in several local Colchester bands. He also made two appearances on the popular BBC children’s program Blue Peter.
