Early Life and College
Karl Malone was born in Summerfield, Louisiana, as the youngest of nine siblings. He was raise on a farm by his single mother, Shirley. His father, Shedrick Hay, had a separate family and tragically took his own life when Karl was 14—a fact Malone kept private until 1994. Growing up, Malone spent much of his childhood working on the farm, chopping trees, hunting, and fishing. He attended Summerfield High School, where he led the basketball team to three straight Louisiana Class C championships from 1979 through his senior year in 1981.
Although recruited by University of Arkansas coach Eddie Sutton, Malone chose to attend Louisiana Tech University, which was closer to his home. Due to low grades, he was ineligible to play as a freshman and joined the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team in his sophomore year under coach Andy Russo. During the 1983–84 season, Malone averaged 18.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
