Duritz co-founded Counting Crows in San Francisco in 1991 alongside producer and guitarist David Bryson. Their demo tape attracted the attention of Geffen Records’ Gary Gersh, leading to a competitive bidding war among nine labels. In April 1992, the band signed with Geffen in a deal so substantial it was jokingly referred to in the industry as the “Accounting Crows” contract.

The group’s debut album, August and Everything After, quickly climbed the charts, reaching the top five on the Billboard 200. The breakout single “Mr. Jones” became a number-one hit in Canada and soared in the U.S. after the band performed on Saturday Night Live, jumping 40 chart positions.
