Duritz co-founded Counting Crows in San Francisco in 1991 alongside producer and guitarist David Bryson. Their demo tape attracted the attention of Geffen Records’ Gary Gersh, leading to a competitive bidding war among nine labels. In April 1992, the band signed with Geffen in a deal so substantial it was jokingly referred to in the industry as the “Accounting Crows” contract.
