Early Life

Born in Newnan, Georgia, Jackson was the youngest child of Joseph Eugene “Daddy Gene” Jackson (1927–2000) and Ruth Musick “Mama Ruth” Jackson (1930–2017). He had four older sisters, and the family lived in a modest home built around his grandfather’s old toolshed. They were primarily of English descent. His mother remained in that house until her death in 2017.

As a child, Jackson mainly listened to gospel music. His musical tastes later expanded when a friend introduced him to artists like Gene Watson, John Anderson, and Hank Williams Jr. He attended Elm Street Elementary and Newnan High School, and after graduating, he joined a band called Dixie Steel. During this time, he supported himself by working construction jobs and operating a forklift while performing in small clubs across Georgia.
