Wilson was born at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle to Shay Cooper, a yoga instructor and actress, and Robert G. Wilson, a novelist and artist known for his science fiction novel Tentacles of Dawn. He has Norwegian ancestry and spent part of his early childhood in Nicaragua before returning to Seattle. He attended Kellogg Middle School and Shorecrest High School, where he played the clarinet and bassoon. He later moved to Illinois, graduating from New Trier High School after his family relocated to work at the Baháʼí National Center.
Wilson began college at Tufts University before transferring to the University of Washington, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in drama in 1986. He then completed an MFA in acting at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and joined The Acting Company. While pursuing his acting career in New York, he supported himself by working as a moving van driver.

His directorial debut came in 2005 with a short film adaptation of The New Bozena.
