Over the course of his career, he scored 52 goals in 288 Premier League appearances across four clubs. Club Career

Born in Croydon, London, to a Nigerian father and Sierra Leonean mother, Cole began his career as a trainee at Chelsea and signed his first professional contract with the club in October 2000. He made his first-team debut on 6 April 2002, coming on as a substitute for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in a 3–0 home win against Everton. Three weeks later, he made his first start, scoring a goal in Chelsea’s 2–0 victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. Cole appeared once more for Chelsea that season, in a 3–1 home defeat to Aston Villa in May.

International Career

Cole represented England at various youth levels, earning five caps for the under-19 team, two for the under-20s, and 19 for the under-21s, scoring six goals in total. He made his senior debut for England on 11 February 2009 in a friendly against Spain. Coming on as a substitute in the 75th minute, Cole had a chance cleared off the line by Carlos Marchena after connecting with a pass from David Beckham. In total, he earned seven senior caps, all as a substitute, a record for England as of June 2021.

Coaching Career

In December 2018, Cole returned to West Ham United to assist with the club’s academy, working alongside under-18 coaches Jack Collison and Mark Phillips.

Controversies

Cole was fined £20,000 by The Football Association for a tweet he made regarding England’s friendly match against Ghana at Wembley Stadium the previous month. In which he jokingly suggested the game was a sting operation by immigration authorities. He request that the fine be donate to a Ghanaian charity of his choice. In March 2015, Cole faced another fine from The Football Association after responding to a taunting tweet from a Tottenham fan, telling him to “Fk off you ct.” After admitting the offence, Cole was fined £20,000.

On 28 November 2021, Cole and BBC Radio 5 Live issued an apology after he made an inappropriate comment comparing a potential dominant performance by Manchester City to a Holocaust for their opponents. The remark was made on the first day of Hanukkah, a significant Jewish holiday.

Cole moved to Indonesia to play football as it was close to Malaysia, where his wife, Sofea. Had returned to live in Kuala Lumpur. Since retiring from football, he has worked as a pundit for talkSPORT, co-hosting the The Sports Bar Weekender on Friday evenings.
