As a young man, Redford was a bit of a troublemaker, having stolen hubcaps in high school and lost his college baseball scholarship at the University of Colorado due to alcohol-related issues. However, during his high school years, he also showed a talent for caricature art, which eventually led him to seriously study art. He spent a year traveling around Europe, hitchhiking, staying in youth hostels, and living the life of a painter. Over time, he came to realize that his art lacked originality and was not very good, so he returned to New York to pursue theatrical design at the Pratt Institute of Art. He later enrolled in acting classes at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

His great-great-grandfather, Elisha Redford, a Protestant Englishman, married Mary Ann McCreery, who was of Irish Catholic descent. They emigrated to New York City in 1849 and later settled in Stonington, Connecticut, where they had a son named Charles, the first in the family to carry the name.
