Early Life and Education
Navarro was born in 1971 into a wealthy, land-owning agricultural family in Nicaragua. Her parents, Violeta Flores López and José Augusto Navarro Flores—who served as Minister of Agriculture during the presidency of Enrique Bolaños Geyer—were central figures in her life. Due to political instability, the family moved to the United States in 1980, while her father remained in Nicaragua to continue his involvement with the Contras, opposing the Sandinista government. Navarro has stated that U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s support of the Contras influenced her to become a lifelong Republican.
She attended the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, a private Catholic college-preparatory school for girls in Coconut Grove, Miami. Navarro earned a Bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies and Political Science from the University of Miami in 1993 and went on to obtain her Juris Doctor from St. Thomas University School of Law in 1997.
