Early Life and Education
Washington was born in the Bronx, New York City, to Valerie, a professor and educational consultant, and Earl Washington, a real estate broker. In her 2023 memoir, she revealed that she learned Earl was not her biological father. Washington’s family is of African-American descent, with roots in South Carolina and Brooklyn. Her mother is of mixed-race background, including English, Scottish, Native American, and African ancestry from the Caribbean. Washington is also related to former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell through her mother’s side of the family.
She grew up performing with the TADA! Youth Theater teen group and attended the prestigious Spence School in Manhattan, graduating in 1994. At 13, she witnessed Nelson Mandela speak at Yankee Stadium following his release from prison. Washington went on to attend George Washington University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1998 with a double major in anthropology and sociology. She also studied at Michael Howard Studios in New York City.
