High School Career

Finney-Smith attended I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. During his junior year (2009–10), he averaged 19.7 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks per game. In September 2010, he committed to Virginia Tech and later signed a National Letter of Intent with them in December. As a senior in the 2010–11 season, Finney-Smith averaged 18 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game. He helped lead his team to back-to-back Group AAA state championships, as well as Eastern Region and District titles. In the state championship game, he recorded 19 points, 17 rebounds, and three blocks. By the end of his high school career, Finney-Smith had been named the VHSL Class AAA Player of the Year twice and was selected to first-team all-state, all-region, all-district, and All-Tidewater honors.

College Career

Finney-Smith began his college basketball career at Virginia Tech in the 2011–12 season, playing in all 33 games and starting 30 of them. He averaged 6.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. His standout performance that season included scoring a season-high 17 points in a 66–65 victory over Boston College. In June 2012, he transferred to the University of Florida and was required to sit out the 2012–13 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
