Kirron Anupam Kher was born on 14 June 1952. She is an Indian politician, actress, television personality, singer, and entertainment producer. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, she was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, in May 2014, representing Chandigarh. Over the course of her acting career, she has won two National Film Awards and received four Filmfare Award nominations. Kirron Kher made her acting debut in 1983 with the Punjabi film Aasra Pyar Da. Following this, she took a break from films, appearing in only one movie during that time, Pestonjee (1987), in a small role alongside her second husband, Anupam Kher.

Her return to the entertainment industry came in the mid-1990s through theatre, where she performed in the play Saalgirah, written by Javed Siddiqui and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan. She also ventured into television, hosting several shows including Purushkshetra on Zee TV, which was notable for its discussion of alternative sexuality and women’s issues. She later went on to host Kirron Kher Today and Jagte Raho with Kirron Kher before returning to Hindi films. Kirron’s comeback film was Sardari Begum (1996), directed by Shyam Benegal, where her performance received immense critical acclaim, earning her the National Film Award – Special Jury Award (feature film). She also appeared in Rituparno Ghosh’s Bengali film Bariwali (1999), which earned her widespread praise. However, a controversy erupted when Bangla actress Rita Koiral claimed she had dubbed for Kirron’s character, suggesting she should share the award. Kirron denied the allegations, stating that she had spent hours rehearsing her dialogues, and the National Film Award was not shared. In 2002, Kirron played a supporting role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period romance Devdas, alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit. Kirron Kher Early Life
Kirron Thakar Singh Sandhu was born on 14 June 1952 in Bangalore, Mysore State, India, into a Punjabi family, and she grew up in Chandigarh. During her first marriage to Gautam Berry, she was known as ‘Kiran Berry.’ After marrying Anupam Kher, she resumed her maiden name and adopted her husband’s surname, becoming ‘Kiran Thakar Singh Kher.’ Later in life, she developed a strong interest in numerology, and in 2003, at the age of 51, she changed her name from “Kiran” to “Kirron” based on numerological guidance, dropping her maiden names and adopting ‘Kirron Kher.’ She is also affectionately known as ‘Grandma India.’
Kirron has one brother and two sisters. Her brother, the artist Amardeep Singh Sandhu, passed away in 2003. One of her sisters, Kanwal Thakar Kaur, is a celebrated Arjuna Award-winning badminton player, while her other sister, Sharanjit Kaur Sandhu, is married to a retired senior officer of the Indian Navy. Kirron completed her schooling in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, before finishing her education in Chandigarh. She later graduated from the Department of Indian Theatre at Panjab University, Chandigarh.
