World Tribal Day Significance

World Tribal Day is celebrated to advocate for and safeguard the rights of the global indigenous community, recognizing their accomplishments and efforts in addressing global concerns like environmental conservation. Given that indigenous populations are frequently one of the most impoverished ethnic groups, the significance of this day cannot be overstated. The United Nations reports that while indigenous peoples constitute less than 5% of the world’s population, they represent 15% of the world’s poorest individuals. Additionally, they speak the majority of the world’s approximately 7,000 languages and embody 5,000 distinct cultures.

World Tribal Day 2025: Over 7 lakh tribal population carrier of sickle cell

As the world marks the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2025 on August 9th, 14 tribal districts in Gujarat are still awaiting the eradication of sickle cell anaemia. Since 2006, the state government has been striving to combat the widespread disease without achieving the desired outcome. Presently, there are 736,000 carriers of sickle cell and 32,000 documented patients. This year’s focus for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2025 is on ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’.

There is a total tribal population of 10.3 million in the state. Through the anaemia control program, screening the 10.3 million tribal population revealed 736,000 sickle cell carriers, with the total number of cases reaching 32,333. An eradication campaign against sickle cell disease was initiated last year in 17 states nationwide.

The campaign involved Data-driven testing (DDT) for initial screening and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for confirmation. Screening tests were carried out by counselors in Anganwadis, schools, and colleges in 14 tribal districts. A total of 1,03,15,900 individuals were screened in various districts, including Arvalli, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Narmada, Chhotaudepur, Dahod, Dang, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Sabarkantha, Surat, Valsad, and Tapi. These districts house a combined total of 2,778 health centers, which include 421 primary health centers and 85 public health centers. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder resulting from a deficiency in hemoglobin, causing red blood cells to assume a sickle shape due to faulty hemoglobin. This genetic condition can be passed down from one generation to the next.
