He attended Marshall High School, where he was regarded as the top quarterback prospect in Minnesota. Although he initially intended to play for the University of Minnesota and was ready to commit after attending a recruiting event in February 2017, he was instead offered a position as a wide receiver or defensive back by the university and other Power Five programs. Lance ultimately chose to commit to North Dakota State in December 2017.
