Skanda Sashti History

Skanda Sashti has its roots in Hindu mythology from ancient times. The holy Hindu book Skanda Purana describes how the demon Surapadman and his siblings tormented the gods and caused havoc in the cosmos. The gods, unable to bear the tyranny, turned to Lord Shiva for assistance. With his holy forces, Lord Shiva created Lord Murugan.

With the divine Vel (spear) bestowed upon him by his mother, the goddess Parvati, Lord Murugan engaged Surapadman and his army in a bloody combat. On the sixth day, following numerous days of fierce fighting, Lord Murugan defeated the demon, restoring balance and peace to the cosmos. Skanda Sashti, which honors this occasion, represents the never-ending conflict between good and evil.
