Early life and education

Lavrov was born on March 21, 1950 in Moscow, to an Armenian father from Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, and a Russian mother from Noginsk, Russian SSR. Kalantaryan was his father’s original surname. His mother used to work for the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Trade. Lavrov received a silver medal while graduating from high school. He intended to attend either the National Research Nuclear University or the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology because physics was his favorite subject, but he instead enrolled at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) and graduated in 1972.

Lavrov studied international relations while a student at MGIMO. He quickly mastered Sinhalese, Sri Lanka’s sole official language at the time, as well as Dhivehi, the Maldives’ national language. He also studied English. After being admitted to the university, Lavrov and other students were assigned to a student construction brigade that was working on the Ostankino Tower for a month.

Career

Lavrov graduated in 1972. According to the laws of the time, a graduate of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations had to work for the Foreign Ministry for a set period of time. Lavrov was hired as an advisor at the Soviet embassy in Sri Lanka since he was already familiar with the nation. At the time, the Soviet Union and Sri Lanka had tight market and commercial ties, and the Soviet Union began producing natural rubber in the country.

The Soviet embassy in Sri Lanka established connections with the Maldives. The embassy in Sri Lanka only had 24 diplomats. Lavrov was assigned the responsibility of constantly analyzing the situation in the country, but he also served as a translator. Personal secretary and assistant to Rafiq Nishonov, who would later become the 12th First Secretary of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan SSR. In addition, he was given the diplomatic position of attaché.

Lavrov speaks Russian, English, Dhivehi, French, and Sinhala. Lavrov is an avid sportsman. He enjoys watching football games on television and is a huge admirer of the Moscow club Spartak Moscow. He has been married to Maria Lavrova since 1971, and they have a daughter and two grandchildren. Their daughter, Ekaterina Sergeyevna Lavrova, who resided in the United States and London while her father worked for the United Nations, graduated from Columbia University. She is not fluent in Russian despite living in New York City until 2014 and spending a significant amount of time away from Russia. She is married to the Russian businessman Alexander Vinokurov.

Lavrov supposedly has been in a relationship with his mistress, Svetlana Polyakova, since the early 2000s. Polina Kovaleva, her 21-year-old daughter, paid £4.4 million in cash for an apartment in London’s exclusive Kensington district in 2016. She holds a master’s degree from Imperial College London. The British government sanctioned her on March 25, 2022, citing charges of “dirty money” as part of a larger sanctions system against corrupt Russian interests following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February.

In February 2022, the European Union, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia imposed personal sanctions on Lavrov for his role in Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In March 2022, the UK sanctioned Polina Kovaleva, Lavrov’s stepdaughter. In April 2022, Canada slapped sanctions on Lavrov’s wife and daughter, Maria Lavrova and Ekaterina Vinokurova. The latter was shortly added to Australia’s sanctions list as well.
