Early life
The parents of Ionescu are Romanian-American, and he was born in Walnut Creek, California. Dan Ionescu, her father, fled communist Romania during the revolution of 1989 and applied for political asylum in the United States. He thought that in a few months, his then-wife Liliana Blaj and their son Andrei would be able to join them, but they couldn’t relocate to the US until 1995.By then, Dan had established a limousine business in Northern California, the region he had chosen to call home due to the presence of multiple extended family members. High school career
Under head coach Kelly Sopak, Ionescu earned varsity basketball letters for four years at Miramonte High School in Orinda, California. She averaged 13.8 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.9 steals per game as a freshman in 2012–13, starting 14 of 29 games. She also helped her team to a 27–3 record and a runner-up finish in Northern California Section Division II. In 2013–14, Ionescu was a sophomore who contributed to her team’s 30–2 record. Ionescu averaged 18.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 4.7 steals per game in her junior year. She also helped Miramonte High School to the CIF open division playoffs by leading the team to a 30-2 record. After averaging 25.3 points per game in her senior year, she guided Miramonte to the CIF open division championship game.
With 24 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds in the final game defeat to Chaminade, she recorded a triple-double. Ionescu also made a buzzer-beating half-court shot in the first half. Among the national awards she won were Gatorade State Player of the Year, Cal-Hi Sports Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year, Max Preps Player of the Year, and USA Today Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
