Background

Luxembourg had taken part in the Eurovision Song Contest 37 times prior to the 2024 competition, starting in 1956. The country claimed victory in five instances: in 1961 with “Nous les amoureux” by Jean-Claude Pascal, in 1965 with “Poupée de cire, poupée de son” by France Gall, in 1972 with “Après toi” by Vicky Leandros, in 1973 with “Tu te reconnaîtras” by Anne-Marie David, and lastly in 1983 with “Si la vie est cadeau” by Corinne Hermès. Following a disappointing outcome in 1993, Luxembourg was excluded from the 1994 contest under the new regulations and has since chosen not to participate.

The Luxembourgish Prime Minister Xavier Bettel initiated talks about the country’s comeback to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024. A dedicated team was formed by the Luxembourgish government to facilitate this return. Luxembourg broadcaster RTL and the European Broadcasting Union confirmed on 12 May 2023 that Luxembourg would participate in the 2024 contest after more than 30 years. RTL’s CEO, Christophe Goossens, expressed excitement about the return and the selection of the 2024 Luxembourgish delegation. RTL later announced on 3 July 2023 that the 2024 entry would be chosen through a televised final.
