Lok Sabha Elections 2025 Phase 5: Key Candidates
Rahul Gandhi: Rahul Gandhi, a member of the Congress party, is running for the Rae Bareli seat. His mother, Sonia Gandhi, holds a more prominent position within the party. Furthermore, Rahul was also a candidate for the Lok Sabha from Kerala’s Wayanad seat in 2019.
Smriti Irani: Smriti Irani, a BJP candidate, is contesting from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, a former stronghold of the Congress party until her victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Currently, she is up against Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, a long-time loyalist of the Gandhi family. This marks Smriti Irani’s third representation for the BJP, having previously lost to Rahul Gandhi in 2014 by a margin of 1 lakh votes and won by 55,000 votes in the subsequent election.
Rajnath Singh: Rajnath Singh, representing the BJP, is a contender for the Lucknow constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He is up against Ravidas Mehrotra, the candidate from the Samajwadi Party. This marks his third attempt at securing this position. In his initial attempt, he emerged victorious, triumphing over the SP’s Poonam Shatrughan Sinha by a margin of 6.3 lakh votes in 2019. In the subsequent election, he again emerged victorious, defeating the Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi with a margin of 2,72,749 votes in 2014. As he vies for the seat for the third time, the likelihood of his success appears to be higher.
Karan Bhushan Singh: Karan Bhushan Singh, the son of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, is standing as a candidate in Kaiserganj, Uttar Pradesh, replacing his father for the BJP party. Due to Brij Bhushan facing numerous criminal allegations, his son, who holds positions as the President of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association and Chairman of a Cooperative Bank in Gonda district, has taken his place. The outcome of his candidacy remains uncertain.
Rohini Acharya:Rohini Acharya, hailing from Saran Bihar, is a prominent RJD figure and the daughter of former Bihar chief minister, Lalu Prasad. She is currently in a political battle against BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy, a two-time winner in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and 2019. In 2014, Rajiv Pratap Rudy secured victory over former CM Rabri Devi, and in 2019, he defeated Chandrika Rai, the father-in-law of Lalu’s son Tej Pratap Yadav. The likelihood of him securing a seat is quite high.
Chirag Paswan: Chirag Paswan, hailing from Hajipur, Bihar, is the current national president of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and is set to contest in the 2025 Lok Sabha elections. His opponent in the upcoming elections is Chandra Ram from the RJD party. Previously, the late Ramvilas Paswan held the seat in 2014, followed by Pashupati Kumar Paras, who secured a victory in 2019 with a lead of 5 lakh votes.
Piyush Goyal: Piyush Goyal, a candidate from the BJP party, is contesting from Mumbai North for the first time in the Lok Sabha 2025 election. He has taken over from Gopal Shetty, the previous BJP representative for the constituency.
Arvind Sawant:Arvind Sawant, a candidate from Mumbai South, Maharashtra, has been elected as MP and served as the Shiv Sena UBT leader twice. He is now contesting against Yamini Jadhav, a Shiv Sena leader under CM Shinde’s leadership.
Ujjwal Nikam: Ujjwal Nikam, a candidate from the BJP party, is running in Mumbai North-Central after replacing Poonam Mahajan for the party.
Omar Abdullah: Omar Abdullah, the National Conference vice-president, is running for the Lok Sabha 2025 seat as a candidate from Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. He is contesting against Fayaz Ahmad Mir of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party and Sajjad Gani Lone of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference.
