Supreme Court takes suo motu cognizance of Kolkata doctor rape-murder incident
Amid the commotion and demonstrations regarding the killing and alleged sexual assault of a postgraduate medical student, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is scheduled to preside over the case on 20 August, as per ANI reports. On 18 August, the CBI team investigating the case of the female doctor carried out examinations and 3D laser mapping in the Emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The deceased doctor’s mother has come forward accusing West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of delaying the investigation and justice. This incident has had a nationwide impact, leading to doctors staging protests in various cities such as Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai. In the meantime, Kolkata Police have summoned former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two prominent doctors for allegedly spreading misinformation and disclosing the identity of the female doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as reported by PTI.
What does the Kolkata Police Update On doctor Rape Case?
Apart from the aforementioned trio, the police have called in 57 other individuals for spreading false information regarding the incident. Dr. Kunal Sarkar and Dr. Subarna Goswami have been specifically requested to present themselves at the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar at 3 pm on Sunday. An alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9 sparked nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. On August 14, a group of people vandalized the protest area and hospital premises at RG Kar, prompting security forces to disperse the crowd. To maintain law and order, the Kolkata Police have enforced Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC), around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for a period of seven days, commencing on August 18.
