The procession of the three sacred chariots of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balbhadra, and their sister Subhadra is a key highlight of the ceremony. These chariots, with their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and elaborate decorations, captivate the attention of spectators. The temples are adorned with flowers, rangolis, and lights, setting a magical ambiance for the festival. Jagannatha Rath Yatra holds great importance in Odisha, drawing people from all over the country to honor Lord Jagannatha. The festival’s rich history continues to attract a growing number of visitors to Puri each year.
Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025: History
The Rath Yatra has multiple legends about its origins. One story suggests that Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, annually visit the Gundicha temple to honor a promise made to Queen Gundicha, the wife of King Indradyumna, who founded the Jagannath temple. According to the tale, Lord Vishwakarma sculpted the current statues of the deities from a wooden log at the Gundicha temple. As he was crafting the idols, Queen Gundicha opened the temple door, causing Lord Vishwakarma to vanish and the deities to remain unfinished. Consequently, it is believed that the sibling deities only leave their temple once a year to uphold their commitment to Queen Gundicha. The Gundicha Temple, dedicated to the queen, is situated three kilometers from the main temple. The deities stay there for eight days before heading back to the main temple on the ninth day, which is called Bahuda Yatra. The day the deities re-enter the temple is known as Niladri Bije, marking the conclusion of the festival.
Why do People Celebrate Ratha Yatra?
Ratha Yatra takes place in Puri, a significant city in Odisha. It is believed by devotees that Lord Krishna or Lord Jagannath wishes to travel to Mathura, his birthplace. The festival is held annually to fulfill this wish. Devotees also hold the belief that participating wholeheartedly in this festival can liberate them from the cycle of birth and death. Muslims also join in the celebration.
How is Rath Yatra Festival Celebrated?
Devotees transport the statues of Lord Krishna, Lord Balabhadra, and Subhadra from Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple, where the statues are placed on chariots. Priests conduct Snana Purnima, a ritual involving bathing the three idols with 109 buckets of water. Following the bath, the idols are secluded until the procession day in a ceremony known as Ansara. The royal heir of Odisha participates in the ceremonial Chera Pahara, where the king carries the deities and situates them on the chariots.
