Hunger Games Release

The premiere of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes took place in Berlin on November 5, 2023, followed by a theatrical release in the United States on November 17, 2023, courtesy of Lionsgate Films. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film was a financial success, earning $337.4 million globally with a production budget of $100 million. Following the film’s debut, The Hunger Games franchise became the 20th highest-grossing film series ever, accumulating $3.3 billion worldwide. A sequel, based on Collins’ upcoming novel Sunrise on the Reaping, is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026.

New Hunger Games film

Suzanne Collins, the writer of The Hunger Games series, is currently working on a new book titled Sunrise on the Reaping. The book is scheduled to be published in 2025, with a movie adaptation set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. Discussions are underway for Francis Lawrence, the director of all Hunger Games movies from Catching Fire onwards, to helm the film.

Sunrise on the Reaping story

Sunrise on the Reaping will delve back into the world of Panem 24 years prior to the events in the Hunger Games trilogy and 40 years after the occurrences in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The narrative will commence on the day of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell. Haymitch Abernathy, played by Woody Harrelson in the movies, will be at the heart of the story. Subsequently, Haymitch will go on to mentor Katniss played by Jennifer Lawrence and Peeta played by Josh Hutcherson in the 74th Hunger Games.

Suzanne, the master storyteller

Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate’s chairman, described Suzanne Collins as an exceptional storyteller and a significant influence on their creative direction. He expressed gratitude for collaborating with such a brilliantly talented and imaginative individual. The Second Quarter Quell is noted as a legendary event that continues to impact the history of the Games, even during Katniss Everdeen’s era, twenty-five years later.

The film franchise

The Hunger Games movie series has earned over $3.3 billion globally, with Catching Fire as the top-grossing film making $865 million. Despite not meeting the success of the original saga, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was able to be profitable within its budget constraints. The storyline of the film revolved around a young Coriolanus Snow, who eventually rose to power as the tyrannical ruler of Panem.
