The U.S. Department of Labor attributes the origin of Labor Day to two individuals, Peter J. McGuire and Matthew Maguire. The American Federation of Labor co-founder Peter J. McGuire is typically credited with proposing the holiday in 1882. Newer research, however, suggests that the notion originated with machinist Matthew Maguire, who was the Central Labor Union’s New York secretary that same year.
Whoever came up with the notion, Labor Day was widely recognized by labor activists and recognized in several states even before it was officially declared a federal holiday. The Central Labor Union planned the inaugural Labor Day celebration, which took place in New York City in 1882. According to History.com, 10,000 workers took unpaid vacation on that day to march from City Hall to Union Square. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Oregon was the first state to approve a statute recognizing Labor Day in 1887, despite New York being the first to file a bill to that effect. Thirty-two states had observed the holiday by 1894.
When President Grover Cleveland signed a measure enacted by Congress establishing the first Monday in September as a holiday for workers, Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894. Significant discontent among labor activists and workers followed by the federal recognition raised awareness of workers’ rights among the general public. According to History.com, workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike in May of that year in protest of wage cuts and the firing of union officials. When labor militant Eugene V. Debs launched a boycott of Pullman railway carriages in June, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago to put an end to the violent riots that followed.
