Early life and education
Dmitry Medvedev was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union, on September 14, 1965. Anatoly Afanasyevich Medvedev, his father, was a chemical engineer who taught at the Leningrad State Institute of Technology from November 1926 until 2004. Dmitry’s mother, Yulia Veniaminovna Medvedeva (née Shaposhnikova, born 21 November 1939), studied languages at Voronezh University and taught Russian at Herzen State Pedagogical University. She would later work as a tour guide at the Pavlovsk Palace. The Medvedevs lived in a 40m2 apartment on 6 Bela Kun Street in Leningrad’s Kupchino Municipal Okrug. Dmitry was the only kid his parents had. The Medvedevs were once thought to be a Soviet intelligentsia family. Early career
Anatoly Sobchak returned from Moscow in 1990 to serve as chairman of the Leningrad City Council. Sobchak hired Medvedev, who previously led his election campaign. Vladimir Putin, one of Sobchak’s former students, now serves as an adviser. The next summer, Sobchak was elected Mayor of the city, and Medvedev became a consultant to City Hall’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. It was led by Putin. Medvedev joined Ilim Pulp Enterprise (ILP), a forestry company based in St. Petersburg, in November 1993 as its legal affairs director. Medvedev assisted the corporation in creating a plan as it undertook a major growth. Medvedev got 20% of the company’s equity. Over the next seven years, Ilim Pulp Enterprise grew to become Russia’s largest lumber company, with an annual revenue of over $500 million.

Medvedev and his wife have a son, Ilya Dmitrevich Medvedev (born 1995). Svetlana Vladimirovna Medvedeva, his wife, was both his childhood buddy and school sweetheart. They married several years after completing secondary school in 1982. Medvedev enjoys British hard rock, naming Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Deep Purple as his favourite bands. He collects their original vinyl records and has previously stated that he owns all of Deep Purple’s recordings.
As a child, he produced copies of their records despite the fact that these bands were on the official governmental blacklist. Medvedev and Sergei Ivanov attended a Deep Purple concert in Moscow in February 2008. Medvedev jogs, plays chess, and does yoga. He enjoys reading Mikhail Bulgakov’s works and is a fan of the Harry Potter series, having asked J. K. Rowling for her autograph when they met at the G-20 London Summit in April 2009.
