Early life
On September 14, 1995, Don Richardson and Deann Watson welcomed Watson into the world in Gainesville, Georgia. He joined the football team, the Red Elephants, and started attending Gainesville High School in the fall of 2010. Bruce Miller, the head coach of Gainesville, had intended to start a rising junior at quarterback in order to implement his spread offense, but Watson emerged victorious and made history as Miller’s first-ever freshman starting quarterback. In his high school career, Watson broke multiple state records, including those for career passing yards (13,077), career passing touchdowns (155), overall yards (17,134), and total touchdowns (218). He scored 63 touchdowns on 4,057 yards of rushes. Watson was a standout junior who won a state championship and was named a 2014 Player to Watch, Junior All-American, and Top.
College career
January 2014 saw Watson enroll at Clemson University. Watson had worn #4 in high school, but quarterback Steve Fuller had retired the number at Clemson after he graduated. Still, Fuller gave Watson permission to don the number. Despite being Cole Stoudt’s backup going into his true freshman season, Watson saw a lot of playing time. He outperformed Stoudt through three games, completing 29 of 41 throws for 479 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. On September 21, Watson was selected to start for the Tigers. With six touchdown passes and 435 yards of passing, Watson broke a school record in his first career start against the North Carolina Tar Heels and led his team to a 50–35 triumph.
During the first quarter of a game against the Louisville Cardinals on October 11, 2014, Watson suffered a fracture to his right hand bone. He missed games against Wake Forest, Syracuse, and Boston College due to the injury. He went back for a game against Georgia Tech, although he was sidelined for the majority of it due to an LCL strain. The following week, he did not play against Georgia State but instead helped Clemson defeat South Carolina, a state rival. It was discovered that Watson’s left knee suffered an ACL tear when he played the game. The Friday before Clemson’s bowl matchup with Oklahoma, he had surgery.
