Paralympics Storylines 2024

1) Conspicuous in absentia

For the first time since London 2012, we’ll have a new recurve women’s Paralympic Champion – because three-time winner Zahra Nemati isn’t competing in Paris. She will be present in the French capital. Nemati’s well-known as a keynote speaker and activist for women’s rights – in particular to access disability support and sport – and a memebr of the International Paralympic Committee’s athlete board. She’s focusing on that job this time around.

2) Sheetal Devi.

When Matt Stutzman participated in his first Paralympic Games in 2012, he was a sensation. An archer without arms? Without a doubt.

In 2024, Matt is competing in his fourth Paralympic Games in Paris, and he has served as an inspiration to a number of other armless archers. The 17-year-old Asian Para Games champion Sheetal Devi, who is representing India in the Paralympics this summer, is the one in the spotlight the most.

She is also a contender.

3) The Czech entertainer.

David Drahoninsky was second in London and Rio after winning gold in his first Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008, and he finished first again in Tokyo 2020. In the W1 category, the soon-to-be five-time Paralympian has advanced to four straight finals. Once again the showman, Drahoninsky has had an amazing run over the previous fifteen years thanks to his signature multicolored hair. But can it continue now that he’s down to 14th in the world rankings?

What is the Archery Paralympics Format?

The competition is divided into two stages: qualifying and matchplay. During the qualifying round, archers shoot 72 arrows, with their total score determining their seed for the head-to-head brackets. In the mixed team event, the seed is determined by the combined scores of the two archers on each team.

Following qualification, archers and mixed teams compete in knockout matches, where the winner moves on to the next round, and the loser is eliminated, continuing this way until a champion is crowned. Recurve matches are decided using the set system, while compound and W1 matches are determined by cumulative scores.
